Drug Uses
Allopurinol is indicated for curing of gout. It is used to treat high uric acid levels in the blood or urine caused by certain types of cancer chemotherapy. It is also used to cure certain people with calcium oxalate kidney stones and high amounts of uric acid in the urine. It may also used for other conditions as recommended by your physician.
How Taken
Allopurinol is taken orally. Visit your doctor regarding the dose suitable for your condition. To avoid stomach upset take Allopurinol with a meal. It is advised to drink extra fluids while undergoing treatment with Allopurinol. It may take 2 to 6 weeks to receive the full benefit of Allopurinol. Continue taking Allopurinol even if you feel well.
More Information
Allopurinol may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects may worsen if Allopurinol is taken with alcohol. Use Allopurinol with caution. Don't drive or perform other possibly negative tasks until you know how you respond to this pill. Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, consult your physician. Allopurinol should be used only by the patient for whom it has been directed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than determined by your doctor.
